OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME :
The mission of the WHO Department of Immunization, Vaccines and Biologicals (IVB) is to achieve a world in which all people are protected against vaccine-preventable diseases. To this end, the objective of the Initiative for Vaccine Research (IVR) is to facilitate the development and optimal use of safe and effective vaccines against diseases of public health importance, with a specific emphasis on serving the needs of developing countries. Within the IVR unit, the Vaccine Research and Development (RPD) group aims to accelerate the development of new or improved priority vaccines and technologies, by guiding the research agenda, facilitating non-clinical and clinical evaluation, and providing evidence to inform vaccination policy.
Description of duties:
- Serve as secretariat to the WHO Product Development for Vaccines Advisory Committee (PD-VAC) as well as to the Vaccine Delivery Technology Advisory Group. Liaise with the Regulatory Advisory Group on Vaccine Technologies in EMP;
- Assist in development of deliverables and documents related to the remit of PD-VAC including Preferred Product Characteristics and Product Development Roadmaps in areas where activity is focused primarily at the vaccine design, pre-clinical or early clinical stages;
- Monitor progress of the global vaccine Ramp;D portfolio to guide decisions about relevant priority of different pathogens for WHO activities, and manage the process of developing annual pathogen-specific summaries documenting the global status of vaccine Ramp;D;
- Monitor progress of the delivery technologies pipeline, and coordinate WHO activities to advance development of immunization delivery technologies, guided by the Global Vaccine Action Plan, and interacting as appropriate with regulatory agencies;
- Serve as focal point for delivery technologies in IVB and coordinate the Vaccine Delivery Technology Project with PATH, BMGF and other partners;
- Collaborate on IVR's resource mobilization efforts and perform other duties as assigned. Perform all other related duties as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Essential
Advanced university degree in biological sciences, medicine, or pharmaceutical sciences.
Desirable
Doctoral degree in biological sciences. Post-graduate training in public health.
Skills:
Ability to review, evaluate and synthesize scientific publications and other complex technical documents. Excellent drafting skills in relation to technical reports, scientific publications and policy documents. Capacity to interact with technical experts in regulatory agencies and academia and vaccine developers in the public and private sector. Thorough knowledge of issues related to early stage development and evaluation of vaccines against diseases considered a priority in low and middle income countries. Thorough knowledge of issues related to delivery technologies for immunization, and preferably experience working with novel immunization platforms, including recombinant viral vectors and novel adjuvants. Solid computer literacy with standard software packages.

Experience:
Essential
At least seven years of industry, biotech or academic work experience in vaccine design and/or delivery technologies and/or early stage vaccine Ramp;D (hands-on or managerial).

Desirable
Experience with multiple delivery technologies. Industry experience, preferably combined with experience of vaccine studies in both high income and low income settings.
Languages:
English
Expert knowledge of English.

Desirable
Beginners knowledge of French.

Annual salary: (Net of tax)
USD 67,611 at single rate
USD 72,605 with primary dependants
Post Adjustment: 105.5 % of the above figure(s). This percentage is to be considered as indicative since variations may occur each month either upwards or downwards due to currency exchange rate fluctuations or inflation.
