OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME :
The Department's objective is to prevent violence and unintentional injuries, promote safety and
enhance the quality of life for people with disabilities. To do so, it uses advocacy, data collection,
trend monitoring, evaluation and dissemination of good practices. The Disability and Rehabilitation Team (DAR) works to: Raise awareness about the magnitude and consequences of
disability; Facilitate data collection and analyse or disseminate disability-related data and
information; Support, promote and strengthen health and rehabilitation services for persons with
disabilities and their families; Promote community based rehabilitation (CBR); Promote the
development, production, distribution and servicing of assistive technology; Support the
development, implementation, measuring and monitoring of policies to improve the rights and
opportunities for people with disabilities; Build capacity among health and rehabilitation policy
makers and service providers; Foster multisectoral networks and partnerships.
Description of duties:
- Provide policy and program guidance by compiling evidence and coordinating the preparation of
information materials, policy documents and guidelines on rehabilitation and related services
relevant to a broad range of health conditions. This will include the development of Guidelines on
health-related rehabilitation and related products.
- Provide expert advice to Member States to strengthen the development and implementation of policy, programmes and services in the area of rehabilitation and related services.
- Build capacity among health and rehabilitation providers through the development and delivery of training materials.
- Strengthen networks, internal and external to WHO, working on rehabilitation and related services to obtain technical inputs, generate buy-in and disseminate the work of the unit.
- Organize global fora and events on rehabilitation to raise awareness about rehabilitation and related services.
- Prepare reports for diverse stakeholders including donors on the rehabilitation work of the Unit.
- All other related duties as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Essential:
Advanced Medical degree in Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine /Medical degree in another
speciality with proven experience in Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine.
Desirable:
Postgraduate qualification in public health, disability, assistive technologies, social services.
Skills:
Solid knowledge and experience in the field of rehabilitation sciences. A high level of motivation,
initiative, flexibility and sense of responsibility. Excellent communication skills with internal and external
stakeholders of all nationalities and cultural backgrounds as well as good presentation skills.
Demonstrated ability to assess critically diverse types of scientific evidence and compile complex
written documents in a clear and concise manner, tailored to the needs of the intended audience.
Ability to work effectively and efficiently as part of a small team. Ability to strengthen network of
relevant contacts to enhance the attention on rehabilitation. Results orientated.

Experience:
Essential:
At least 7 years of experience in rehabilitation, some of which should be at the international level. Proven experience of working effectively with diverse personnel in health, rehabilitation and social services.
Desirable:
Experience in planning, setting up and running rehabilitation programmes in low and middle
income countries. Experience in coordination and management of important international meetings.
Languages:
Essential:
Expert knowledge of English
Desirable:
Instermediate knowledge of French

Annual salary: (Net of tax)
US$ 67 611 at single rate
US$ 72 605 with primary dependants
Post Adjustment: 103.3 % of the above figure(s). This percentage is to be considered as indicative since variations may occur each month either upwards or downwards due to currency exchange rate fluctuations or inflation.
