Purpose of the Post:
To promote and support research, evidence generation and innovation in Member States of the Eastern Mediterranean Region

Objectives of the Programme:
To promote and support the development of research for health capacities and systems within the EMR including:

- Development of national health research policies and strategies;
- Development of the scientific infrastructure and resources necessary for a national research for health system.
- Identification for support national research priorities addressing population health needs and the health system response to these needs.
- Promote the dissemination and translation of relevant evidence and research for health results to health policy and practice;
- Establishment of national ethical and bio-ethical norms and standards which guide research innovations for health and relevant health related practices.
Description of duties:
Organizational Context:

The nature of the work entails close coordination and collaboration with relevant partners, stakeholders and entities within WHO and Member States in developing (and sharing with all stakeholders) policies, strategies, plans guidelines and other related information, which are aimed at strengthening research, particularly its conduct and its utilization. The incumbent will interact with WHO/HQ and Regional research counterparts and partake in the fulfillment of the global health research commitments. Within EMRO, the incumbent will support and when appropriate coordinate the Regional Office response and activities to generate evidence to enhance realization of regional priorities.

The incumbent will play a key advisory and supportive role to the Member States to strengthen and build robust essential national health research systems. The scope of tasks includes interaction, coordination and networking with researchers, policy makers / decision makers, relevant institutions, interested donors and philanthropists.

Summary of Assigned Duties:

Under the direct supervision of Director Information Evidence and Research and the general guidance of Director of Programme Management, the incumbent will perform the following duties:

1. Lead and coordinate activities of Research Development and Innovation team.
2. Support training and research development at the regional and country levels.
3. Promote and strengthen the national capacities and institutions for governance, management and support of research, innovation and development.
4. Build skills in design and conduct of research, innovation and generation of evidence which lead to dissemination and translation of evidence into policies and practice.
5. Promote innovation and the development of technology solutions, including e-Health and biotechnology which lead to improving the performance of health systems and population health outcomes.
6. Support and strengthen national institutions and bodies which promote and monitor the ethical conduct of medical practice and research.
7. Oversee the publishing of the Eastern Mediterranean Health Journal, the flagship health periodical of the Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean, the mission of which is to contribute to improving health in the Region by publishing quality health research and information with emphasis on public health and health systems research of relevance to regional priorities.
Essential: University degree in health related field and Master's degree in Public Health or health research field.

Functional Skills and Knowledge:

In depth knowledge of Research Management in the context of needs for Health For All (HFA)/ Primary Health Care (PHC) and Health System Research (HSR). Excellent presentation skills.
Other Skills: Proficiency in MS Office.
Essential: At least ten years of relevant experience at the national and international levels in conducting and managing health research with adequate exposure/engagement with the international research community.

Desirable: Academic designation at the level of associate or full professor positions. Previous experience in an international organization would be an asset
Excellent knowledge of English. Working knowledge of Arabic and/or French is an asset

US$80734 at single rate
US$86904 with primary dependants
Post Adjustment: 39.4 % of the above figure(s). This percentage is to be considered as indicative since variations may occur each month either upwards or downwards due to currency exchange rate fluctuations or inflation.
