Organization unit:
The main objectives of the unit are:
To support Member States in building capacity to generate and use relevant information, evidence and research;
To improve the availability, quality and use of health information at country and regional level;
To strengthen the evidence base at regional and country levels to inform policies and strategies, and to monitor health, including progress towards the MDGs;
To support Member States to strengthen their national health research systems to improve stewardship (including ethical oversight); financing, human resources, infrastructure and research output and application;
To strengthen the generation of knowledge, tools and methods, to inform policy and action, and improve the prevention and control of communicable and non-communicable diseases;
To support Member States to adopt and implement policies and strategies for knowledge management and sharing, including eHealth
To improve access to health-related scientific knowledge and to WHO policy, strategy and technical guidance documents, including coordinating AFRO web-related activities;
To improve the sharing and re-application of experiential knowledge
To strengthen WHO's internal capacity in all areas related to knowledge generation, dissemination and use.
Description of duties:
The incumbent will provide technical expertise and coordination for
1.Monitor and promote the implementation of the Regional Committee resolutions on eHealth in the African Region.
2.Coordinate AFRO's collaboration in eHealth with the African Union Commission and other partners
3.Support countries to adopt and implement eHealth policies, harmonisation strategies and solutions, including strengthening country capacities.
4.Strengthen country capacities on data exchange standards, metadata and interoperability.
5.Identify and share best practices in eHealth and health informatics in the Region.
6.Support networking in the Region. In particular develop, manage and strengthen the eHealth regional focal points network in countries
7.Support the strengthening of the African Health Observatory and the establishment of National Health Observatories in countries in the Region.
8.Identify eHealth partners and develop resource mobilization activities.
Essential: Post-graduate degree in Health informatics or computer technology

Desirable: Training in Health System, health Observatory development.
Proven experience to function within multi-disciplinary and multi-national teams. Extensive knowledge of information management. Capability to interact with senior level government officials. An ability to communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing and to work with people of various cultural backgrounds and to provide technical leadership, organization, programme management and performance evaluation.
Essential: 7 Years of experience in global public health including practical experience in the development and coordination of eHealth policies, health information and knowledge management systems.

Demonstrable analytical skills experience in previous work; Working experience with WHO or other UN agencies. Experience in developing countries.
Excellent knowledge of English with a good working knowledge of French. Knowledge of Portuguese would be an asset
Annual salary: (Net of tax)
US$ 67,395 at single rate
US$ 72,373 with primary dependants
Post Adjustment: 65.3 % of the above figure(s). This percentage is to be considered as indicative since variations may occur each month either upwards or downwards due to currency exchange rate fluctuations or inflation.
