OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME :
Within the Governing Bodies Department, the Office of Language Services provides high-quality, timely and cost-effective translation services to WHO's governing bodies and technical programmes in the six official languages, so as to make health policy and technical documentation from WHO as accessible as possible.
Description of duties:
1. To translate into Arabic for the Web, the top levels of WHO.int, press releases, fact sheets and outbreak news.
2. To contribute to the establishment of accurate terminology in Arabic and to promote the TRA terminology database.
3. To translate Governing Bodies' pre-session and in-session documents, as well as other technical materials, as required.
4. To perform other related duties as required.In order to undertake the above activities the ncumbent is called upon to :a) apply linguistic and analytical skills to produce elegant, concise and accurate translations; b) undertake reference and terminology work as required;c) consult with originator or competent units to clarify ambiguous points and solve problems relating to terminology or meaning; d) draw attention to any errors or inconsistencies in text to ensure that they are corrected in the original and in other language versions as appropriate; e) advise on Arabic usage on request.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Essential: University degree in translation, languages, social sciences, literature, or in a subject field of interest to WHO.
Skills:
Evident advanced knowledge of translation. Knowledge of editorial and terminology work. Ability to use computer equipment. Team spirit, tact and discretion. Ability to work to tight deadlines. Familiarity with health-related subjects. Ability to use computer equipment and familiaritywith the use of the Internet for research in connection with translation.
Desirable: Familiarity with web procedures.

Experience:
Essential: At least five years' experience in translation and self-revision in Arabic, of which at least three years should be at the international level, preferably within the UN system.
Desirable: Experience in terminology or in applications of computer science to translation.
Languages:
Essential: Expert knowledge of English and Arabic, with an intermediate knowledge of French.
Additional Information:
The following priority order will be observed in the screening of candidates: 1. WHO staff members (Continuing, Fixed-term and Temporary appointments), 2. External candidates.

Annual salary: (Net of tax)
USD 56,091 at single rate
USD 60,091 with primary dependants
Post Adjustment: 103.3 % of the above figure(s). This percentage is to be considered as indicative since variations may occur each month either upwards or downwards due to currency exchange rate fluctuations or inflation.
