OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME :
WHO Press is located in the department of Knowledge Management and Sharing within the cluster of Health Systems and Innovation at the World Health Organization headquarters. This unit is responsible for publication of the Bulletin of the World Health Organization, promotion and distribution of WHO monographs, the Global Health History Seminar series, managing copyright and licensing translations. The Bulletin is one of the world's leading public health journals. It is a peer-reviewed monthly with a special focus on developing countries, giving it unrivalled global scope and authority. The Bulletin is one of the top 10 public and environmental health journals with an impact factor of 5.4, according to the Institute of Scientific Information (ISI). It is essential reading for all public health decision-makers and researchers who require its special blend of research, well-informed opinion and news.
Description of duties:
Screen submitted manuscripts for originality, methodological rigor, international public health significance and suitability for the readership of the Bulletin of the World Health Organization.
Write letters of rejection, choose peer-reviewers, present reviewed papers to editors' meetings and correspond with authors on those papers considered for publication.
Select, train and supervise external technical editors and supply them with formatted manuscripts in function of each issue's print content and early online publication needs.
Ensure that technical editors' work is consistent with the WHO style guide, and is technically accurate and approved by corresponding authors.
Contribute to the development of WHO Press monographs and serials as required by the Coordinator, WHO Press.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Essential
Recognized university degree in medicine or science and post-graduate degree in public health and/or epidemiology.

Desirable
Additional post-graduate qualifications in advanced epidemiology and biostatistics.
Skills:
Essential
Extensive knowledge of the public health literature.
Ability to judge original papers for novelty, relevance, methodological accuracy and suitability for publication by the World Health Organization.
Full knowledge of the peer-review process used by scientific journals.
Well-developed skills in presenting and communicating research results.
Thorough knowledge of technical editing requirements.
Ability to supervise external editors, to jointly produce highly accurate and legible text, figures and tables to a monthly publication schedule.
Computer literacy: word processing, spreadsheet and presentation software.

Experience:
Essential
7 years of editing experience for a peer-reviewed journal in the basic or applied sciences.
Publications in peer-reviewed journals.

Desirable
Familiarity with manuscript tracking systems and open access publishing.
Languages:
Essential
Expert knowledge of English.

Desirable
Intermediate knowledge of French and/or another UN official language.

Annual salary: (Net of tax)
USD 67483 at single rate
USD 72467 with primary dependants
Post Adjustment: 103.3 % of the above figure(s). This percentage is to be considered as indicative since variations may occur each month either upwards or downwards due to currency exchange rate fluctuations or inflation.
