The Division of Information, Evidence, Research and Innovation (DIR) was established in order to strengthen Member States' ability to collate, analyse and interpret health evidence, to link the WHO Regional Office for Europe (WHO/EURO) more closely with the research community, and to enable the Regional Office to anticipate and analyse change and assist with the formulation of evidence-informed health policy. DIR provides a cross-cutting service that helps all partners, including WHO/EURO programmes, to adequately collate, analyse, interpret and disseminate their health information.

Within the Knowledge Management and Dissemination team in DIR, the main tasks of the Library, Languages and Publications (LLP) unit are to provide services to the Regional Office in the fields of translation, publication and library services.

Purpose of the Post:
Translation and self-revision of texts of a general or specialized nature covering health and related subjects, as well as administrative, legal and financial matters, from Russian AND French or German into English. Editing of English original material prepared in connection with sessions of the Organization's regional governing bodies and major conferences. Note-taking for and drafting of reports of governing bodies' sessions and major conferences. Guidance of freelance translators and junior colleagues.
Description of duties:
The incumbent will:
  • translate into English from Russian as well as from French and/or German a wide variety of texts dealing with health and related subjects as well as administrative, financial and legal matters. As a self-revising translator, the incumbent must produce elegant, concise and accurate translations that will not be subject to further review;
  • edit all English original material prepared in connection with sessions of the Organization's regional governing bodies and major conferences;
  • note-take for and compile draft reports of governing bodies' sessions;
  • carry out all necessary terminological inquiries and research work, incorporate the material thus generated in the sub-unit's terminological database, and contribute to the production of glossaries;
  • review and revise texts produced by freelance translators;
  • give guidance to freelance or less experienced translators as required;
  • perform related tasks as required.
Essential: Advanced university degree in translation, languages or a subject related to the work of the Organization.
Desirable: Training in terminology management.

Functional Skills and Knowledge:
  • Proficiency in the use of common PC applications (e-mail, word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, etc).
  • Experience of computer-assisted translation programmes (eg, Trados, Déjà Vu, etc).
  • Translation, revision and editing skills, as well as analytical skills.
  • Ability to work as a member of a team and with people at all levels of the Organization, as well as with professional counterparts outside the Organization.
  • Negotiation and communication skills.
Essential: Considerable experience in the field of translation and revision at national level and 3-5 years' experience in the same field at international level.
Desirable: Translation experience in the health field.
Essential: English mother tongue, excellent knowledge of Russian and thorough knowledge of French or German.
Desirable: Knowledge of the fourth working language of the European Region (German or French).
Additional Information:

Annual salary: (Net of tax)
USD 67,483 at single rate
USD 72,467 with primary dependants
Post Adjustment: 73.3 % of the above figure(s). This percentage is to be considered as indicative since variations may occur each month either upwards or downwards due to currency exchange rate fluctuations or inflation.
