To ensure continuing availability of valid scientific, technical, managerial and other information
relating to health to Member States in the official languages of WHO.
Description of duties:
1.Translate from English into Arabic, and sometimes from Arabic into English, and self-revise a wide variety of texts dealing with public health and related fields, as well as administrative,
financial and legal matters (correspondence, resolutions and records of WHO's governing bodies, working papers, scientific articles, speeches, press releases, programme statements, web material, reports, etc.) Such translations may be considered final and not subject to further review.
2. Revise for accuracy and conformity with established WHO terminology and style texts translated by less experienced, temporary or outside translators, and to edit Arabic translations, as required.
3. Contribute to the establishment of accurate terminology and to the development of the TRA
terminology data base.
4. Head task forces for special assignments such as meetings of the Health Assembly and the Executive Board and to perform other related duties and act for Team Leader, Arabic translation, as required.
* Essential:
University degree in translation, languages or a related subject matter relevant to the work of WHO.
Higher degree in translation, linguistics or related field. Knowledge of other scientific areas is an

Esssential Skills:
Evident advanced knowledge of translation. Sound knowledge of editorial and terminology work.
Team spirit, tact and discretion. Ability to use computer equipment and familiarity with the use of
the Internet for research in connection with translation. Familiarity with health-related subjects
* Essential:
At least seven years' experience in translation, with at least two years' experience of self-revised
translation. Most of this experience should ideally be within the UN system.
Experience and/or training in terminology or in applications of computer science to translation.
Excellent knowledge of English and Arabic. A good working knowledge of French is desirable.
Additional Information:
The following priority order will be observed in the screening of candidates: 1. WHO staff members (Continuing, Fixed-term and Temporary appointments), 2. External candidates.

Annual salary: (Net of tax)
$67 483 at single rate
72 467 with primary dependants
Post Adjustment: 103.3 % of the above figure(s). This percentage is to be considered as indicative since variations may occur each month either upwards or downwards due to currency exchange rate fluctuations or inflation.
