The objective of the department Public Health and Environment (PHE) is to tackle the environmental determinants of health in a comprehensive way, working through the health sector and with other relevant sectors. The objective of the Water, Sanitation, Hygiene and Health (WSH) unit is to support Member States in implementing effective actions to prevent water, sanitation and hygiene-related disease.
Description of duties:
The incumbent will work in the group of the UN-Water Global Analysis and Assessment of Sanitation and Drinking-Water (GLAAS, under the supervision of the UN-Water GLAAS project manager. The incumbent will work in close coordination with the WHO/UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme for Water Supply and Sanitation (JMP,

1. Provide support to WHO Regions and Member States in the acquisition of data on water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) and inputs put in place by governments and concerned stakeholders (e.g. policies, financing, human resources) by working through existing WASH monitoring platforms and the GLAAS questionnaire.
2. Through GLAAS contribute to strengthening and harmonizing country-led WASH sector assessments.
3. Develop and configure the data management system of the UN-Water GLAAS data set, which includes coordinating an online system to allow for submission and presentation of data from countries and donors/external support agencies, along with transparent display of data sources and a system of validation.
4. Support UN-Water GLAAS survey preparation and implementation, including the possibility to run online surveys.
5. Support UN-Water GLAAS data analysis, including bringing new ideas on how to analyse and present data.
6. Support the production of the UN-Water GLAAS report, global and regional highlights.
7. Other duties, including occasional support to the WHO/UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme for Water Supply and Sanitation.
Advanced university degree in environmental science or management, public health, statistics or related field.

University degree in development studies, public health or economics.
Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
Ability to work effectively with internal or external clients.
Demonstrated capacity to seek continual improvement in the services, systems or one's knowledge.
Initiative and ability to work independently.
Good planning and organizational skills.
Good understanding of database management.

A minimum of 7 years' experience involving work working with processing, analysing and interpreting environment and health related-data, including aspects related to water and sanitation, of which at least three years of international experience.

Experience in developing countries.
Experience working with individuals and issues pertinent to environmental or public health policy and monitoring, including with governmental bodies at country level.
Familiarity with WHO technical/administrative systems.
Website development.
Excellent knowledge of English or French with a working knowledge of the other language are essential.
A working knowledge of another UN official language would be an asset.

Annual salary: (Net of tax)
USD 67483 at single rate
USD 72467 with primary dependants
Post Adjustment: 99.4 % of the above figure(s). This percentage is to be considered as indicative since variations may occur each month either upwards or downwards due to currency exchange rate fluctuations or inflation.
