OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME :
-To support Member States in the African Region in effectively integrating new born health in Maternal, child health and related services towards improving new born health and survival;
-To promote the use of tools and guidelines for implementing new born high impact interventions;
-To provide support to countries in formulating and implementing policies, strategies and operational plans for New born health.
Description of duties:
1.Develop norms and standards in care and management of the new-born including those born to HIV positive mothers;
2.Develop appropriate information packages and guidelines for use in newborn health;
3.Promote and support integration of new-born health into Maternal and Child health as well as other related services;
4.Support monitoring and documentation of the implementation of New-born health strategies;
5.Promote the involvement of families and communities in the development of health service interventions for maternal, newborn and child health;
6.Undertake operational research in priority newborn health problems to provide evidence for the development of interventions and programmes;
7.Facilitate effective partnership with other UN Agencies and partners (UNICEF, UNFPA, UNAID, USAID, SNL) and resource mobilization, and ensure Newborn health is given due attention at country, regional and global level;
8.Carry out other assignments within his/her area of expertise as may be required by the Director.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Recognized Medical Degree with Postgraduate degree in Paediatrics; and Postgraduate degree in Public health preferably in MCH.
Skills:
-Technical and managerial competence in new born, maternal and child health;
-Familiarity with the newborn situation in the African region particularly the cross cutting issues between maternal and child health;
-Ability to make technical decisions relating to implementation of newborn and related interventions.
Experience:
Essential: At least seven years in senior managerial and or in clinical practices.

Desirable:Experience in national, district, community and primary health case.
Languages:
Knowledge of English or French and working knowledge of the other
Annual salary: (Net of tax)
US$ 67,483 at single rate
US$ 72,467 with primary dependants
